Our current feature:

An Introduction to Selenite

Selenite (also referred to as Gypsum – although the clear variety is Selenite) is found in Morocco, Mexico, England, USA, Russia, Austria, Greece, Poland, Germany, France, Sicily – but most commonly seen from Morocco and Mexico.

Selenite can come in many colors: white (most common), blue, green, orange-brown and peach. Colors can be caused by the presence copper, sulfur, silver, iron, coal, calcite, limestone, and opal.

Selenite forms around hydrothermal veins ( hot springs ), clay beds and sedimentary rocks. It's scientific name is hydrated calcium sulfate.

This mineral has a Hardness Rating of 2 (very soft!) and it's soluble in acid. It belongs to the moloclinic crystal system (most minerals belong in this system); this system is formed from parallelograms.

Trivia Question:

WHY IS SELENITE SO DEAR TO THE SHOP?
(email us the correct answer and receive 10% off one item)

Selenite sometimes forms in “mica-like” sheets, as well as rosette-shaped balls (desert-rose).

The most amazing discovery of Selenite took place in the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. The amazing specimens of selenite formed in caves that had been submerged in water and the discovery came as the mine was pumping the water out to lead to more silver and zinc areas. Please take time to watch the attached presentation that tells more about it and show the spectacular pictures!!!
